What's in the report

13 pages · 4 charts · 3 data tables

Original reporting you can cite.

Not a marketing document. Working field data from 100+ gardens across Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Bedfordshire, with methodology, sample sizes, and limitations stated honestly.

Most common garden problems

Frequency data across 100+ gardens: brambles (68%), mossy lawns (54%), neglected hedges (47%), drainage (41%), failed fencing (38%).

Plant survival observations

Survival rates by soil type: lavender on chalk (94% thrive) vs lavender on clay (24% fail). Box blight impact. Rhododendron failure on alkaline soils.

Lawn-condition trends

Only 18% of lawns in good condition at first visit. Moss dominance, weed dominance, bare patches, compaction, the patterns we see.

Average clearance factors

Cost ranges by garden size, with waste volume as the single biggest driver. £150-£350 small garden up to £1,500-£3,500 large overgrown plot.

Seasonal delays

Planned vs actual visit frequency by month. Spring is worst for delays; autumn is the most reliable season for major work.

Soil and exposure patterns

Four distinct soil regions in the Chilterns and Thames Valley, chalk, clay, clay loam, sandy loam on gravel. Different problems in each.

Effect of access on cost

Two identical gardens can cost 40% different based on access alone. Through-house access adds 25-40%; rear lane access saves 10%.

Methodology & limitations

Sample skew (gardens already in trouble), geographic concentration, time period, causality caveats, all stated honestly.

References

Met Office, BGS, RHS, DEFRA, HSE, Environment Agency, all public sources cross-referenced. Internal CGM data sources listed.

Sample findings

Three things you'll learn.

A taste of what's in the report, enough to decide if it's worth downloading the full 13-page PDF.

01

Brambles affect 68% of gardens

Nearly seven in ten gardens we visit have bramble or ivy encroachment. In half of those, the growth is significant, meaning the garden has been left for at least one full growing season.

02

Lavender thrives on chalk (94%) but fails on clay (24%)

The plant is identical. The only variable is the soil. No amount of feeding, watering or pruning compensates for putting a plant in the wrong place.

03

Access can add 40% to project cost

Two identical gardens can cost 40% different based purely on how we get waste in and out. Through-house access adds 25-40%. Rear lane access saves 10%.

04

Only 18% of lawns are in good condition

The remaining 82% have at least one significant issue, moss dominance (34%), weed invasion (22%), bare patches (16%), or compaction (10%).

"Most garden advice online is generic, written for a notional UK garden that does not exist. Real gardens have specific soils, specific exposures, specific histories."

- From the report introduction

Why we published this

Most garden data is locked inside individual companies. We're publishing ours.

We believe publishing our working observations, with clear methodology, sample sizes and limitations, contributes to a better-informed gardening public and a more honest conversation about what gardens actually need.

This is original reporting that homeowners, journalists, search engines and AI systems can cite. Google's current guidance prioritises unique, expert-led, non-commodity material. We have tried to produce exactly that.
